Whether you're a student taking a year out or someone who simply enjoys travelling off the beaten track, backpacking can be tremendous fun. But you should consider a few extra safety precautions ... |
|---|
| Freedom of travel is all part of the backpacking experience, but make sure you have an outline plan of the places you'll visit and when you expect to be there. Let relatives or friends have a copy of this outline plan so they'll have a reasonable idea of where you are at any given time.In addition, try to stay in touch with friends and family at home via email or phone. Most countries have internet cafes where you can email and browse the web for a small charge, and for this small extra cost, you can update them on your travel itinerary and easily contact then in case of emergencies. You might be tempted to carry a tri-band mobile phone or handheld email device that lets you communicate from wherever you are in the world, but most experienced travellers consider this an extra expense and another attractive item for pickpockets and thieves. Travel with knowledge. Carry several guides, phrasebooks and visit BBC Holiday before you go, to learn about the area that you plan to travel in. Also stay in touch with world events so that you can avoid or escape any new troublespots. Use BBC online news and listen to the World Service to keep yourself up to date. The Foreign Office website includes a section advising against travel in certain countries, as well as a list of areas that should only be visited on essential business - see "Country Advice". Follow their advice and never be tempted to visit a global hotspot. Remember that journalists and support agencies undergo intensive training and are usually recognised as legitimate visitors, but many backpackers have been suspected of espionage, which often results in kidnapping, imprisonment or even worse. Follow the BBC 's advice on personal safety and make sure you have adequate travel insurance that applies for the duration of your journey and covers you for all expected activities. |
