Cash And Travellers Cheques

cash
Don't take large amounts of cash on holiday - simple as that. If your cash is taken from you it's normally gone forever, but there are alternatives you could consider.
One alternative is to use travellers cheques. You can buy these from any bank or tour operator before you travel and can then cash them in at a bank or a 'bureau de change' at your destination whenever you need more money during your holiday.
You sign them when you buy them and then again when you cash them in. For added security you must keep a note of the serial numbers separate from the travellers cheques. If they are lost or stolen you can then report the loss, with the serial numbers, and they will be replaced - meaning you can still get your money. Also leave a note of the numbers with someone at home who you can get in touch with quickly. Some holidaymakers don't like travellers cheques because they lose out on the exchange rate. This is true, however it might be a small price to pay for not losing all your spending money in one go. Another option is to use your credit card on holiday. That way you won't need to carry a lot of cash and you may not suffer so badly on the exchange. Research before you go.Whether you choose travellers cheques or cards, you're bound to have small amounts of cash on you sometimes. So whether you're carrying cash, cheques or cards, remember these guidelines:
  • Never leave them unattended in bags on the beach, in your hotel or at the airport or station - even if just for a few seconds

  • Keep them in a secure pocket or in a concealed money belt and never in your suitcase or rucksack

  • Be aware of your surroundings and look out for pickpockets - they're always on the look out for tourists

  • Have all emergency telephone numbers handy, including the local police, so that you can report any theft immediate
