If you are an elderly person and you're worried about crime, you should follow much the same prevention advice as anyone else. Take care when you are out and about. See our sections on when you're out walking and on public transport.

Keep your possessions safe by securing your home. In particular, follow the advice on doors and locks and windows, as it's worth noting that you may be entitled to help towards paying for security improvements from your local council. Check with the housing department about these payments.

Note the other tips included in our Your home section especially those on property marking, and don't keep large amounts of money in your home. Keep it in a bank or building society where it is much safer.

Get to know your neighbours, as it will be helpful to both of you if you get to know each other's routines. Why not join or set up a local Neighbourhood Watch scheme. It is especially important not to let strangers into your home. Fit a door chain and viewer, and follow the advice in our section on bogus callers.
